Do Ceramic Filter Cartridges Really Remove Limescale?

Jun 07, 2026 Leave a message

Working Principle of Ceramic Filter Cartridges
Ceramic filter cartridges are a common filtration material that effectively removes suspended solids, bacteria, heavy metals, and other harmful substances from water. They work by utilizing the micropores of ceramics; water is filtered through these micropores, leaving impurities on the filter cartridge while clean water flows out.

Can Ceramic Filter Cartridges Remove Limescale?
While ceramic filter cartridges effectively remove harmful substances from water, they are not the best choice for removing limescale. Limescale is mainly formed by the precipitation of carbonates from metal ions such as calcium and magnesium, which cannot be filtered out by micropores. Therefore, ceramic filter cartridges cannot completely remove limescale.

With prolonged use, ceramic filter cartridges will accumulate a large amount of limescale, causing blockages, slowing the water flow, and reducing the filter's filtration efficiency. In this case, the filter cartridge should be replaced promptly.

How to Remove Limescale from Filter Cartridges
Limescale on ceramic filter cartridges cannot be removed by the cartridge itself, but it can be cleaned using some simple methods.

1. Cleaning with vinegar and water: Soak the filter cartridge in vinegar and water. Vinegar can dissolve limescale. Generally, use a 6% vinegar and water solution. Soak for 30 minutes, then clean with a brush.

2. Cleaning with citric acid: Soak the filter cartridge in citric acid water. Citric acid forms a complex with the calcium ions in the limescale, reducing its crystallinity and thus removing limescale.

In summary, although ceramic filter cartridges cannot completely remove limescale, proper cleaning and replacement are necessary to ensure their filtration effectiveness and lifespan.
